The brief announcement said: “It is with the greatest pleasure that the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh announce the betrothal of their beloved son, the Prince of Wales, to the Lady Diana Spencer, daughter of the Earl Spencer and the Honourable Mrs Shand Kydd” Mr Shea said, “The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have both known
Lady Diana Spencer for some time and are delighted at the engagement.” Prince Charles proposed to Lady Diana a few days before she went to Australia on February 6. He gave her a sapphire and diamond engagement ring. He told the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh at Spndringham in early February. Lady Diana gave the news to her mother before she left Australia to return to London on February 17. Mr Shea said that in the last few days news of the engagement had been given to the other members of the Royal Family: to the Prime Minister, Mrs Margaret Thatcher; the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Michael Foot; Commonwealth Heads of State, and heads of Government and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
