Disruption of school
PA Wellington Communication with the Correspondence School has been severed by an industrial dispute. The dispute which results from an alleged cut in staff numbers, involves about 60 clerical staff at the school. They began a series of rolling stoppages on Monday. The mail room, which handles pupil’s lessons and general inquiries, came to a standstill. Another section of the staff yesterday refused to answer telephones. After industrial action last year, the school got four extra administrative staff members and the allocation of a further 17 was to be the subject of a later representation to the Government. The chairman of the Wellington section of the Public Service Association, Mr A. Leverton, said the staff had been told that there was to be an immediate cut of two from 64 to 62. Two staff members had left, but under the “sinking lid” policy the school was not permitted to replace them.
