The Pope’s visit to Philippines
Sir, — The Pope has finally visited the. Philippines and uttered much' rhetoric about human rights. He warned church people not to take “an exaggerated interest in the wide field of temperal problems” and consequently failed to make’the connection between words and action in the life and death, struggle for human rights. Predictably, he reiterated his. stand on abortion and birth control, thus diverting people’s attention away from the glaring injustices of their country.. Many Philippine people throughout the world feared that a Papal visit would serve only to legitimise Marcos’s one-man rule (whether it be martial law or not), and the Christchurch' ’ Philippine Support Group therefore supported an international petition which was presented to the Pope before his trip, urging him not to visit., the' Philippines. If the situation of the majority (the poor) does not improve, then his visit can only be seen as a failure. — Yours, . ’WENDY KISSEL. For the’ Christchurch Philippines Support Group. February 24, 1981.
