Wildlife on the sewage ponds

Sir, — In comment on P. A: G. Howell’s letter (February 21) I hope that the recently elected City Councillors will show their concern and disapproval of the recent shooting of Canada geese on Drainage Board land by declaring this area, adjacent to the sewage ponds a wildlife sanctuary and erecting the well-known wildlife sign. Canada geese numbers can be reduced painlessly by removing all' or some of their eggs. The Acclimatisation Society is responsible, for controlling the numbers ,of geese and a notice should be put in the newspapers saying what they intend to do, where and when. We should follow the example of Peter Scott’s famous Wildlife Trust Sanctuary at Slimbridge in Britain where all migratory and non-migratory geese and ducks as well as many para-

dise ducks from New Zealand safely graze and are not subjected to the terror of irresponsible and irregular shooting. — Yours, etc. N. E. FINN. February 23, 1981.
