Industry ‘should he less protected’
PA Wellington New Zealand must move to a lower level of protection for industry, the Labour member of Parliament . for Lyttelton (Mrs Ann Hercus) said last evening. Protection was a key in 'providing incentives for industry to concentrate on areas where it had real advantage. “It seems to me that we must move to a more uniform, and over time, to a lower level, of : protection,” she told the Association of Economists. That did; ■■not mean the door should be open to flcods of; cheap imports and huge loss of. jobs. A lot of protection, did not guarantee jobs, j : - Changing • . the. system would require an open and positive,lead from, the Government, an Industrial Development Commission with necessary resources, and a readiness to provide meaningful adjustment help for industry ,and workers.
