Steele equals cycling mark
Michael Richards’ four-year-old national junior record for the kilometre time trial finally yielded a little to Murray Steele’s pressure at Denton Park on Sunday evening. The 19-year-old national representative equalled the mark of lmin 11.4 s in winning the Canterbury open kilometre time trial championship, also becoming the first junior to win the open title. It was a comfortable victory for. Steele in- the unfavourable conditions: a cold, strong wind blew throughput and the meeting did not finish until nearly 11 p.m. Even so, there were some very good times. Craig Adair, another junior, and Tony Strang, were second equal with their times of lmin 12.95, and Kim Reid and yet another junior, Shane Smith, shared fourth place with. .1:13.5. ■ ional qualifying mark was ■ Paul Flattery, with his best i time of 1:14.1. There were another three ; riders not far away from i qualifying to ride, as of right, at the Healing natI ional hard track championships, the qualifying time being lmin 14.95. Tony Fuller and William Rastrick, both juniors, did 1:15.0 and 1:15.6 respectively, while Kelvin Steele has a sound 1:15.3. Michael Hazeldine set a Canterbury record, and was a half-second away from the New Zealand.mark, in winning the boys’ 500 m time trial in 37.15. He also had an easy win, with Jamie Nisbett (38.5), lan Cooper (39.0), the title-holder, and Malcolm Robertson (39.6) well back.. The other leading boys’ times were: Craig Nichols, 40.1; Shane Hendren, 40.3; Dean Harvey, 40.4;. Dean Lovett, 41.9; and Phillip Gibbs and Peter Coates both did 42.0.
