Banks staff favour strike
Christchurch, Timaru and Auckland members of the Bank Officers’ Union yesterday voted overwhelmingly to support direct action if necessary to obtain their wage claims.
; They rejected a wage offer |of 13.5 per cent for most officers and 13.75 per cent for about 20 per cent of the officers. The union claims an across-the-board 14 per cent rise pips a 6 per cent “work value” payment. The Christchurch stopwork meeting voted 770 to 51 in support of direct action, Timaru members voted by 113 to three, and Auckland.by 1160 to 173, Other branches wilt hold stop-work meetings this week. The results will be considered by the union’s national council on Friday. The union says the “work value” claim is necessary to cover the “additional skills and responsibilities in trading banks over the last 10 years.”
