Police abandon Taupo search
PA Rotorua i The Taupo police yesterday morning abandoned the search of a thermal: area for a missing Hamilton woman, Anna Mary Berntsson, aged 24, who was last seen at the Craters of the Moon thermal area just north of Taupo on February 5. The police said the ther-; mal activity was too dan-, gerous to drag the steaming: craters. A policeman on Monday] photographed what was! thought to be a footprint; near the lip of one of the] craters. Checks were made of the area on Monday, but the thick mist caused by recent rain made a thorough search too difficult and dangerous. The search was prompted by forestry workers who on February 5 noticed that Miss Berntsson’s empty car had been parked at the craters for some hours. The area was closed to the public ort Saturday while the police and forestry workers searched unsuccessfully for her.
