Archbishop satisfied with HART gift
PA Wellington The Roman Catholic Metropolitan of New Zealand (the Most Rev. T. S. Williams) is satisfied that the church organisation which gave $lOOO to HART is doing its job adequately. The gift by the Commission for Evangelisation, Justice and Development has been described by the Roman Catholic weekly, the “Tablet,” as an embarrassment to the Church.
“We do not believe that the commission acted wisely, and we believe it. went beyond its authority,” the "Tablet”, said. Archbishop Williams said it was part of the commission’s work . to receive money to disburse according to, its agreed and • established policies. “As Ur as I am concerned the commission is doing its job,” he said. As with similar' organisations . in the Church,' the
commission would report on its activities to the bishops in the normal way and he expected the next report to be considered soon after Easter. “The deed is done and it does not make any difference whether I go into a tizzy now about it,” he said. The “Tablet” said: “We object to money that has been raised from the Catholic people by way of Lenten-giving programmes Ibeing used in this manner.”
