Unemployment

Sir,—Sympathy is voiced by J. S. Lyon for unemployed people (February 9) and M. O’Neill has accepted the dole and the “reality” of unemployment (February 9). Unfortunately this attitude of acceptance is all too prevalent, and sympathy and “feelings” seem to be-the main reactions. I too have concern for the unemployment level, but have no time for sympathy and feelings on the subject. Our unemployment has grown along with our Welfare State, with its prohibitive taxes and government spending. And that Welfare State has grown to pro-vide-services for us- that we should.be providing ourselves. As'long as we accept that the Government should have responsibility for our lives, we will have all the problems associated with that. I am doing something about this, not accepting it or talking about it. If everyone else who professed concern would do something, we would have no problem. — .Yours, etc., ROBIN WILLIAMS. February 9 1981.
