’Copters put out Lewis Pass fire
Four helicopters carrying monsoon buckets were needed to control a fire which destroyed 500 ha of tussock alongside the Lewis Pass highway north of the Hanmer Springs turn-off yesterday. The -tfire was first, noticed alongside the highway 10km beyond the turn-off early yesterday morning- and it was not until late last evening that it was under control.. Firemen will stand by at Lochiel Station overnight in case of a flare-up. About 40 men from the Amuri County Fire Service, the Hanmer Springs Volunteer Fire Brigade, and Forest Service employees fought the blaze. ' As well as the four helicopters, bulldozers and graders were used to create fire breaks.
