Huntly miners strike
PA Hamilton All Huntly’s four State coal mines were shut yesterday as opencast miners joined their underground colleagues on strike. After a mass meeting at Huntly last week about 250 members of the Waikato Miners’ Union (Underground) walked off the job in support of a production bonus not being paid to 79 workers at the Mahons mine at Rotowaro. The strike has effectively closed that mine, the Huntly West mine near to the power site and Huntly mine at the other end of the town.. The Rotowaro State opencast union official, Mr Slater, whose union represerits about 45 workers, reported yesterday that his members had just voted to stop work in protest for the day
