Bottles hurled at police

Members of the armed offenders squad and policemen equipped with riot gear quelled a disturbance in Bealey Avenue early this morning. Between 20 and 25 youths were arrested and charged with a breach of the peace. Some members of the Mongrel Mob will appear in the District Court this morning .. The disturbance started at 11.30 p.m. when policemen visiting a house in Bealey Avenue near Colombo Street were showered with bottles and other missiles.

The police had earlier attempted to stop a car but it sped to the house, which is surrounded by high iron fences.

The bottle throwing continued for at least 45 minutes as police reinforcements arrived.

Streets in the area were cordoned off and about 70 members of the public were kept well back from the house.

Police with riot gear lined the gang members up against, the fence while others went to search the house. Several members were searched and put into a poh’ce van.
