A Southland family has offered a" free holiday on their " farm,, to a young American woman who was released from prison last week aft(r a charge against her of? importing heroin, was dropped for want of prosecution. Miss?/Susan Freeman, aged. 23, had cohte to New Zealand on holiday to recuperate ffom cancer surgery, but says that she will leave “disillusioned.” Miss .- Freeman was arrested early in the morning of January 19 after the police had found her in possession of a white
powder-substance. - She said that she had been interrogated for several hours. She appeared in court? the next morning, but" the charge was dropped for want of prosecution when a ’ scientific analysis confirmed that the white powder was not heroin. Miss Freeman says that the powder was ■ painkilling drug prescribed after surgeries to remove tumours from her body. “I will never come back here. That’s for sure,” she said. Last evening, a South-
land farming family telephoned “The Press” with an offer of-a free holiday for Miss Freeman before she left New Zealand. The wife of the farmer said that her family wanted to remain anonymous, but urged Miss Freeman to get in touch with her through “The Press.” “We thought that she might like a quiet holiday in friendly surroundings after all this. It would be a dreadful shame if she flew out feeling the way she does at the moment,” the woman said.
