Sound Wave expected to win rich Auckland Cup

Special correspondent Auckland Sound Wave seems as well placed as any horse could be to win the Auckland Cup tomorrow. A five-year-old, he has arrived at the big race with 51kg, B.skg less than weight-for-age, and what is more in peak form.

Since the declaration of the cup weights, Sound Wave has turned in two excellent performances for which he could not be rehandicapped. The first of his only two races since the weights brought a second placing in the Avondale Cup, the second, his win just last Monday in the weight-for-age King’s Plate at Ellerslie. In the Avondale Cup he carried 51.5 kg, in the King’s Plate, 58kg. The luxury that his cup weight has become is plain to see.

Drum is a fine due every consideration for: all his 57.5 kg. His win ini the last Waikato Cup, withj 56.5 kg, was thoroughly decisive and it was evidence of his class wnen he won the 1600 m Thames Valley Stakes the next time. The sixth placing he had to settle for in the Avondale Cup did not reflect the worth of his run as he became hopelessly unbalanced round the home turn. Assessed and Washington are both in winning form, Assessed having taken the 2400 m Queen Elizabeth Handicap at Ellerslie on Boxing Day, Washington the 2200 m Summer Cup on , Monday. Decibel, without luck, has been racing well. She adds much to the strength of the bottom of the handicap, along with Arethusa a dan-gerous-looking lightweight.
