Spectacular crash
PA Greymouth The fifth race at Reefton on Monday turned into a shambles when Chontique fell 500 m from the finish and brought down over half the field. Despite the spectacular nature of the crash, which left only six horses in the race, only Leicester Tatterson, the driver of Great Step was injured. He was treated on course for a badly bruised ankle. An inquiry was held into Chontique’s fall, and after hearing from the driver, W. S. Cummings, and N. G. Smith, the trainer, . it was found the horse had broken free of interference and had fallen. It was decided that Chontique be declared ineligible to start at a totalisator or trial meeting up to and including February 28, 1981.
