Prospecting bid approved
PA Invercargill An application to prospect for oibshale deposits at the Nevis, - : in Otago, has been approved-by the Minister of Energy (Mr Birch). ' ; - . An Australian mining company, Cue Minerals NL, had applied for a coal-prospecting licence for about 25,(K)Oha in the Lower Nevis Valley. .The Nevis has the largest known oil-shale, deposits in New Zealand.
A, spokesman for the company, Mr James Willis, of. Wellington,. said that 1 it was expected to be up to three weeks before the licence was received. The company .) envisaged that prospecting,?, would
start late in January. Before then the landowner concerned would be approached to discuss the activities.
The application was for a period of two years and the prospecting is restricted to the summer months. Mr Willis said that the initial work would be completed within two months.
The Nevis application was the first of several in Otago and Southland which may go before Mr Birch. Between them Cue Minerals and Petro Quest Pty, another Australian mining company, are prepared to spend up to $750,000 on .exploration for coal in the two provinces.
