Guerrillas advance in strength
NZPA San Salvador The El Salvador Government has sent armoured vehicles, and planes to the northern border region to try to halt the advance of a 1500-strong guerrilla column, an Army spokesman six soldiers had been killed in fighting which broke out between government troops and the heavily, armoured force of Left-wing guerrillas, the spokesman said. Army surces said tne guerrillas’ 30-km advance into El Salvador from mountain refuges on the Honduras border was their biggest offensive since the overthrow of El Salvador’s military President, General Carlos Humberto Romero, in October last year. ; The spokesman said the column was thought to include Cuban and Panamanian guerrillas. The capital remained tense with sporadic outbursts of violence prompted by Leftwing attempts to disrupt traffic by blocking streets with buses, the police said, No casualties were reported.
An Army communique said earlier that six guerrillas and national guardsmen were killed on Boxing Day when fighting in El Salvador’s undeclared civil, war resumed after a Christmas lull.
