Well deserved win for Canterbury

Canterbury scored a thoroughly deserved win against Wellington in the first round of the Brabin Cup cricket tournament at Dunedin yesterday. Starting the second day, Canterbury was in some trouble at 93 for five in Its first Innings; but so well did it recoverjhat it won by five wickets and with two overs In hand.: The- lower, order batsmen served Canterbury well in the first Innings, with Barry Ward batting extremely well with a neatly-compiled 45 not out, to get Canterbury to within one run of Wellington. When Wellington batted a second time, Canterbury was determined to bowl it out cheaply; and the bowlers, not handicapped this time with a wet ball, did just that. Wellington was on the defensive from the first over, and succumbed eventually for 93.

Doug McMillan got a lot of life from the otherwise placid pitch, and-David Boyle, although not getting much turn with his offspinners, bowled a good line and length in supporting McMillan. Auckland had an overwhelming victory against North Districts, winning by an innings and one run, and it and Canterbury will meet in what should be the tournament decider, starting on Wednesday. In the other match, Central Districts and Otago had an exciting draw. Central requiring
