Turgenev tale Ivan Turgenev’s “On The Eve” is a poignant love story set in the ninetenth century Russia which is read in 10 episodes for the BBC by Claire Bloom. National programme, 10.30 p.m. Elena is staying on her parents’ family estate outside Moscow when her circle of admirers is joined by the young Bulgarian revolutionary. Insarov. They fall hopelessly in love and back in Moscow they meet secretly for her family want her to marry someone of their choice. A secret marriage and Insarov’s bouts of illness as they prepare to leave to fight for the Bulgarians lead up to a tragic conclusion. Cricket The third cricket test between New Zealand and Australia (day four) commentary will be carried by the YC stations from 10.30 a.m. today. Local cricket, bowls, and softball will also be covered on the sporting programme. The Concert programme is scheduled to resume at S.lO p.m. . T After Cliristmas Each morning in the week ahead, Professor Colin Gibson of Dunedin will be contributing a programme at 10 a.m. on the National programme in which he explores the aftermath of the events of Christmas. His first programme. today, he has entitled “Herod Faces Failure.” Other themes, which people may not have given thought to before, are “Shepherds returning to their jobs,” “Joseph and Mary as refugees,” “Magi facing the long journey home” and “Reflections of the Innkeeper after the event.”
