Brutus unlikely starters in Timaru Cup today

| By W. R. CARSTON ’ i Late yesterday Polly Pother was the lone scratching j for the Timaru Cup. But ’after the running of the- ; Dunedin Gold Cup it was re-1 jported that Brutus will also’ j drop out of the field for i today’s $15,000 metric-miler, i Brutus threw three plates, during the running in yester-’ day’s cup and was sore, after the race. His defection i will brighten the prospect ofj ja victory for either The Fan-! tasv or The Twinkle in the, first leg of the South, Canterbury Jockey Club’s, T.A.B. double. The Wingatui jockey, Allie, Robinson, stable rider fori the Dennis brothers, whoi prepare The Fantasy and The Twinkle, had the choice of which of the two sisters he would ride and has plumped for The Fantasy. Robirison won the Canterbury. Jockey Club’s Coruba Stakes on The Fantasy earlier this month and partnered The Twinkh when she won the Jockey Club Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting last month. The Fantasy won the Coruba Stakes in style so Robinson’s decision to ride her again was no surprise. The Riccarton jockey, Michael Mein, will be The Twinkle’s Timaru Cup rider. With Brutus out of the way, the hardest for the Woodlands stablemates to beat might be Flying View, a talented sprinter-miler from Lionel Pratt’s Orari stable, and Riccarton’s Gretna Green. These two were the best behind The Fantasy in the Coruba Stakes last time out. If the result follows betting trends in the Trailways ; Handicap Sharebroker could carry the day for Jim Lalor’s Ashburton stable. Karozshah, which generally would have been expected to make a race of it with Sharebroker, was scratched yesterday, leaving an eight-horse field for the second leg of the double. There will be a treble for course patrons only in the Temuka Maiden, the Ascot Highweight and the First Members’ Handicap. The latter event will also be the first leg of the T.A.B. treble. The other legs of that treble will be the Waugh and Second Members’ Handicaps.
