Clutha hydro potential
Sir, — Feeling is running high in the Millers Fiat-Et-trick area at unannounced surveying for dam sites between Roxburgh and the sea. The most destructive of four earlier., alternative proposals would flood 4125 ha, affect 7G,Booha and involve 107 properties; the least damaging would flood 1883 ha, affect 52,800 ha and involve 55 properties. The Minister of Regional Development, Mr Cooper, tells residents they have nothing to fear. “The Government is very aware of the need to develop hydro potential and at the same time save valuable agricultural and horticultural land from inundation.” Tell that to the Cromwell Gorge orchardists whose 19 per cent of the national apricot crop is to be sacrificed because just such a compromise (the low dam at
Clyde) has been prevented . -by the same Government Even so the cost would have been high.
