Zurich airport hit by blast
NZPA Zurich A bomb exploded yesterday at a Zurich airport, destroying a radar installation but causing no injuries. Graffiti found nearby could connect the blast to small groups and Swiss youths who went on a midtown rampage on .Christmas Eve, the, police saidi Anti-riot police squads used tear-gas and rubber bullets to break up the Christmas Eve rioting as demonstrators threw broken glass and rocks,; at . the police. Two demonstrators and one policemen suffered minor injuries and 64 demonstrators were arrested. , Twelve demonstrators, including one foreigner who was not identified; remained in custody “ yesterday, authorities said. The explosion did not stop flights, but made them more difficult, they said. Those arrested were among some 1000 demonstrators, members of the Swiss Youth Movement that has. held a series of rallies to protest against, a city government decision m October to close a local youth centre on grounds it was becoming a haven for drug addicts and petty criminals. The demonstrators wanted the youth centre reopened for the Christmas period. The city refused, but offered alternative accommodation which the Youth Movement in turn refused.
The young are also protesting against the uniformity and materialism of Swiss society in what has been seen as a late manifestation of the youth culture protests that convulsed most of the rest of Western Europe in the late 19605.
