Icy air chills America

NZPA New York Northerners in the United States bundled up yesterday over a cold, white Christmas as Arctic air swept the eastern half of the country and temperatures plummeted to record lows in dozens of cities.

At Old Forge, New York, in the Adirondacks, the morning low was minus 37.8 deg. C. One of the perennial cold spots, atop Mount Washington in New Hampshire, had a reading of minus 36.7 deg. on Christmas Eve.

The icy weather interfered with the annual reenactment of General George Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River during the Revolutionary War. Shore activities at Washington Crossing, Pennsylvania, were on as usual, an official of the event said, but the actual crossing of the river was cancelled because of ice on the river and high winds that produced a wind-chill factor of minus 40 deg. C. New York City was wander, at minus 18 deg. C. at 8 a.m. but that still shattered a 100-year record for Christmas Day. The previous record there for Christmas was minus 2.2 deg. • • fc.
