These lands are used extensively by the public for recreation and/or for the grazing of livestock and the ban is imposed in the interests of Sa peMlties are provided under the bylaws for failure to observe the ban on shooting and carrying of firearms. The prohibition on public access extends over the area of the McLeans Island plantations and all adjoining land within the general limits of 400 metre,-, from the southern boundary of the plantations and all riverbed within 400 metres of the south bank of the Waimakariri River from the McLeans Crossbank to the northerly projection of the upstream boundary of the West Melton Rifle Range.
