Engineer to retire
The Municipal Electricity l Department’s chief Engineer, Mr W. G. Johnstone, will retire in February after more than 34 years with the Christchurch City Council department. Mr Johnstone has been chief engineer since 1962. He started as a technical assistant with the M.E.D. in 1947 after five years experience in Britain. He graduated from the University of Canterbury. He has been a long-time:
advocate of underground power cabling, and has served on the Electric Supply Authorities Engineers’ Institute executive. Mr Johnstone took a big part in pressing for a higher voltage in the M. E. D. system, and the first 66,000volt equipment was commissioned in 1969 to start the job of increasing the powersupply’s reliability and quality. the M.E.D. area now has more than 30km of 66,000volt underground cable.
