Police question editor
NZPA-Reuter Johannesburg i ' 1 The South African police , have interviewed the editor i of the “Rand Daily Mail’’ j over allegations made in the j newspaper about the role of the Prime Minister (Mr Pie- I ter Botha) in the scandal i which led to the downfall of ] his predecessor, John Vor- < ster, the paper has said. i Earlier this week the t
i“Rand Daily Mail” said it had rough drafts of the report by the Erasmus Commission which investigated the misuse of funds by the Government’s Information Department. The paper said the drafts had apparently been submitted to Mr Botha before publication and said they contained several handwritten changes and deletions. *
Mr Botha denied that he ■ had been responsible for any changes in the drafts and I members of the commission issued a statement saying i the paper’s report was "devoid of all truth.” Yesterday the newspaper said that two senior police officers interviewed the editor, Mr Allister Sparks, and told him they were in- • vestigating possible allegations of theft or defamation.
