James II coin found
• Greymouth reporter 1 ’A coin which is nearly 300 years old has been found in old gold claim workings at Dunganville by ti Greymouth man, Mr M. Case. The coin is about the size of a 50c piece, is dated 1690 end is made of brass. Mr Casa said he thought It had been brought to New
Zealand by the Irish gold miners because there is a bush track called Irishman track not far from where the coin was found. A Greymouth coin collector said he believed the coin was part of the “gun money” minted by King James II when he went to Ireland. This money was made from brass scrap, including cannons.
