No bail for Miles
A man, who absconded to
the United States while awaiting trial' on drug charges, was remanded in custody to February 9 by Mr Justice, Roper in the High Court yesterday. Mr M. J. Glue, who appeared for Kevin John Miles, a former jeans shop properietor of Christchurch, made no application for bail. ■ In October, 1977, a jury in the Supreme Court failed to reach a verdict on charges against Miles of possession of LSD and hashish for supply with an alleged street value of $40,000. Mr M. A. Bungay, of Wellington, appeared for Miles. Mr Justice Roper- granted Miles bail pending the new trial but he failed to appear and orders were made forfeiting bail. •According to an affidavit swom by Detective Sergeant A. E. Harris, Miles changed his name bv deed poll to Paul John McMahon, McMahon being his mother’s maiden name: The change of name ■ was registered with the Registrar of Births, Deaths, and Marriages in Lower Hutt. Last May Miles was arrested by F. 8.1. agents in San Francisco and he fought a number of legal battles to prevent his return to New Zealand but he was brought home by the police last Friday on, a charge of breaching a maintenance order made in Christchurch.
