Cropping field day
Lirteoln College’s annual cropping field day will be held on the college cropping farm on Wednesday. December 10. Organised by the college in close association with staff from the Crop Research Division, of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, the day will concentrate on practical production matters and a brief time will be spent on a review of college research work-with fodder beet.
College, D.S.I.R. and industry speakers will .talk to visitors on a variety of topics, and while walking about farmers’ will get a good view ed the cropping farm.
Wheat will come in for close study at two points — one on yield and the other bn diseases. These probably deal with the two major areas fa profitable wheat production at present. . Bariey wJU be reviewed by Mr Jim Malcolm, of the D.S.I.R. He will review varieties and, talk In some detail about. the components of,yield,. A crop not as- well documented as wheat, lit’ is assuming greater -importance how and should attract interest among growers. - • -
Peppermint has been established on the college property and Mr Emmet Hobbs, of Mint Oil Industries’ Ltd, will discuss the latest position with this crop. . . Matau prairie grass, peas and white clover will also come in for attention. A review of fodder beet production trials,
harvesting trials and trials associated with beet storage will be on the programme. A college crop of recently sown beet will be used for demonstration purposes, together with beet from lost year’s harvest being held for storage trials. This will be in the morning.. The field day starts on the farm at 10-30 a.m.
