NIGEL ROBERTS, who wrote the accompanying article on the Ross Island crosses and took the photographs, is a senior lecturer in political science at the University of Canterbury. He spent the 1979-80 summer research season in Antarctica as the information officer/photographer for the Antarctic Division of the D.S.I.R. Next February, Mr Roberts will take up the position of director of continuing education at Victoria University, Wellington.
