Medium cars (1.3 — 2 litres)
This segment of the market contains the widest variety of models. One of every two new cars bought in New Zealand comes from this category, with a slight preference towards the upper end of the range. Mitsubishi's Mirage 1400 sells for $9595, and the Lancer EX, which has just been redesigned, for $10,759 (with five speed gearbox), or $11,276 (automatic).
The Celeste fast-back 1600 is $10,795, and the 2L version, pictured below, is $11,630. The 1980 Sigma 2000 GLX manual sells for $11,649 and the manual Super Saloon is $12,595 (auto $12,995). The waggon is $11,995.
The Talbot Alpine hatchback is $13,750, but the Avenger 1600 series is considerably cheaper. The manual sedan is $8785 (automatic is an extra $640) and the waggon $9085. The Holden Sunbird range begins at $10,395 with the SL Manual. The automatic version is $11,065. The SLE manual is $11,195 and the automatic $11,865.
Commodore estates are $12,415 for the manual gearbox, and $13,155 for the automatic. The SLE manual is $13,415, and the SLE automatic $14,155. Ford’s contribution includes the Escort and Cortina ranges. The Escort 1.6 Sport (two door) is under $lO,OOO at $9760, but the 1.6 Ghia (four door manual) sells for $10,715 (the auto for $11,329). The Cortina 1.6 Sedan is $9990, and the 2 litre Ghia automatic, a luxury car, is $13,145. The Cortina 1.6 waggon is $10,855, the 2 litre sedan (manual) $11,085 ($ll,BOO for automatic), the GL sedan $11,775 to $12,490, the 2 litre waggon $11,995 to $12,710, and the 2 litre Ghia manual $12,430. Toyota’s range encompasses the Corona 1600 XR at $10,290, the Corolla liftback at $11,990, and the XT manual sedan $10,990 to $11,690 (automatic). The manual waggon is $11,790, and the automatic version $12,490. The 1800 cu cm Corona liftback costs $12,600, and the Cressida 2 litre $ 1 2,8 0 0 (five-speed manual, or $13,300 with automatic).
Mazda’s 626 sedan, 4 speed is 511.150 (automatic $11,850. The five-speed is $12,000. The Morris 1700 sedan manual is 59540 (automatic $9995), the waggon from $10,510 to $10,920. Honda have two models in this class, the Civic and the larger Accord. The 1335 cu cm Civic sells for $8490 (manual, three door, or $8844 automatic). The five-door, ver-
sion is $8962 (automatic $9225). The 1600 cu cm Accord sells for $11,277 in the three-door manual version. $11,579 in the auto version, $11,630 for four doors, and $11,905 for four doors and automatic transmission.
Another 1600 cu cm car is the Isuzu Gemini, which has four doors and a price tag of $9995. Datsun’s just released
1600 cu cm Bluebird costs $10,995, and $13,600 for the 2 litre ZX version. The fastback 140 Y Coupe is $10,200.
Fiat produce a 131 fivespeed at $17,507 (automatic $18,623) and a 2L racing 131 at $18,869. The racing 132 has five speeds and costs 520.057. The Princess costs $ 1 1,0 7 6 (automatic $12,340), and the Princess R $13,500.
