Seoul restructures news industry
NZPA-Reuter Seoul Ten South Korean newspapers and news agencies closed yesterday in the first phase' of a new plan to reorganise and trim the country’s media. The ‘ Korean Newspapers Association and the Broadcasters Association announced earlier this month that they had voluntarily decided to reorganise the media to serve the public interest better.
But the idea was clearly in line with President Chun Doo Hwan’s policy of purging .all sectors of South Korean society which began shortly after the late President Park Chung Hee was assassinated by the head of
the Korean Central Intelligence Agency in October last year. President Chun, then a major-general in charge of the Military Security Command, first purged the i armed forces and then the 1k.C.1.A. Widespread resignations followed in the Gov-> ernment. the civil service, State corporations, and the i private sector. ; Last July, 172 newspapers land magazines were closed !by the Government for publishing what it described as corrupt, obscene, and distorted reports. The seven newspapers and three economic news agencies which closed yesterday will merge with other news organisations.
