More funds for N.B. creche?
The New Brighton Creche may receive more Christchurch City Council financial help after its first year in business. The council’s community services committee said yesterday that the creche should receive a 35 per cent subsidy on salaries expected for the next year, or about $5500 of the expected $15,700 salary cost. Councillors said that the council should also keep ’EM ” 8 “ The committee’s chairman, Cr D. J. Rowlands, said that he was impressed with the amount of voluntary work done at the creche, and with the. number of children who were provided for.
The creche cares for 47 children a day, on average, and is fully booked by 10 a.m. most days. Under the Social Welfare Department limit,, 30 children can be cared for at a time. Cr Noala Massey said that the creche had been established to see if a suburban creche could survive with a lot of community help, and it' had worked. Financial support should continue, as an example to other suburbs. ' a, The creche earned $12,500 in fees and donations in its first year, compared with total spending of $lB,OOO. Salaries were $12,950. The total running cost might be $22,000 next year.
