Meeting abandoned after five races
PA Masterton The Masterton Racing Club’s meeting at Opaki yesterday was abandoned after - the first leg of the T.A.B. L double,’ the Mauriceville . Handicap . because of dangerous track conditions. The decision came after the stipendary steward, Mr Greg Humphries, members of the judicial committee and senior jockeys had inspected the track at a point where Caucus, one of the favoured runners in the first leg, fell. It was the second time a horse had fallen about the 800 m mark, the first being Bally Countess, in the third event, the First Ardsley Park Maiden. Neither; jockey — Des Harris (Caucus) or Stephen Cherry (Bally Countess) — was hurt. Mr. Humphries said the abandonment had been a unanimous decision of the : judicial committee. He said that the frequent showers of rain which fell throughout the afternoon made .the surface slippery. The track had been firm. sort of case you have to have regard for the safety of the jockey and there was no way the situation was going to improve,” Mr Humphries said.
