Suzuki considers Avant
The former New Zealand road racing champion, Stewart Avant, of Christchurch, is being considered for a place in the B r i t i s h-based Suzuki works team as a Formula One rider. The team was hoping to sign the prominent Irish rider, Joey Dunlop, but he lecently joined Honda, leaving the Suzuki camp in a quandry. If Avant was an Englishman, he would probably get the nod. The
team management is quite obviously keen to include an English rider because . its two,,top men, Randy Mamola and Graeme Crosby, ai;e from the United States and New Zealand, respectively. The thought of another foreigner in what is basically a British-organised team goes against the grain. However, Avant had two rides on the Formula One works Suzuki earlier this year and performed
creditably; His rivals for the place include the . Yorkshireman, Mick Grant, who recently lost his place in the Honda works'- team, and John Newbold, a former member of the team who rode well on a private Suzuki last northern season.
