Schoolchildren at show

Sir, —The recent A. and P. show is obviously a great spectacle for both adults and children alike. However, your correspondent Shirley Bennett (November 26) complains about school parties bent on “self-destruction,” being present at the show. Children are always expected to be excited about school trips especially to such a fascinating place as the show. Perhaps Shirley Bennett should go back to school and learn a little more about children? Basically children are happy folk and excitable; it is a pity more of us are not the same. — Yours, etc., BRIAN S. KEELEY. November 26, 1980.

Sir, — I totally agree with Shirley Bennett (November 26) about the dangers of schoolchildren at the show. The exhibitors cannot be expected to take responsibility for the ignorance of the dangers with cattle and horses. Children generally have very little fear and most farm animals are dangerous if frightened by excitable children, and I know from experience with adults, that some also have very little knowledge of the dangers. Shirley Bennett’s suggestion of banning school groups from these areas would certainly be in the interests of all concerned. — Yours, etc.,

ANN HARPER Kaiapoi, November 26, 1980.
