As the finishing touches are added to Cromwell and his pikemen, the Cavaliers stand ready for battle on the chess board. This set of the English Civil War is one from a limited edition of 250 hand-made sets and painted by Marenka, Karen, and Janina Roseby, three sisters from Oxford, England. Alternative sets of the American Civil War are available in a limited edition of 300. Each of the personalities are carefully chosen for their role as chess figures. The Kings are figures of political power or Commanders-in-Chief. In this set Charles I, who is supported by his resourceful Queen Henrietta Maria, opposes Cromwell and his wife Elizabeth. The design for each dress is carefully researched in contemporary records before each piece is hand-cast in a mineral medium. The figures are then hand painted with intricate detail picked out in gold leaf.
