Temple man arraigned
NZPA-Reuter San Francisco, A former People’s Temple member, Larry Layton, has pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiring to murder Congressman Leo Ryan and a State Department official in Guyana two years ago. The murder of Con? gressman Ryan and the attempted murder of Richard Dwyer, the State Department official, led to the mass murder-suicide of nearly 1000 people at the People’s Temple compound
lin a remote north-western area of Guyana. The only comments by Layton, who is 33, were “yes sir” when District Judge Robert Peckman asked if he was aware of the charges.
The judge set a hearing on December 4 to consider a defence application for bail. Congressman Ryan was investigating charges that the People’s Temple was holding relatives of Californians captive in the compound, named Jonestown after its leader, Jim Jones.
