PA Nelson The cadet training programme at Nelson College is about to experience the gentle touch tor the first time.
Ten Form Four pupils from Nelson Girls’ College will join the cadet force during its annual camp in the Ilira State forest this week. From this group, 30 girls will be selected to undertake a Fourth Form training scheme in 1981. Ike girls will also have the chance to :.;tend training at Burnham Military Camp.
The decision to allow the first girls to join the cadet force follows discussions between the principals of both colleges. “Earlier this year, I was approached by a group of girls asking whether thev could take part in the
cadet training programme at Nelson College,” said the principal of the girls’ college, Mrs E. M. Perrott. “I have investigated the matter fully and consulted the New Zealand cadet force commandant, Lieu-tenant-Colonel M. Winton and the commanding officer of the Nelson unit, Mr E. J. Brewster. Mrs Perrott received, support for the scheme from the college council of governors. While the college Form Three cadet programme is ('escribed as “basic,” the Form Four scheme involves activities ranging from map reading and field craft to weapon training and drill. “The training takes place at Nelson College. Ike girls selected will be released from classes and escorted by two staff members and several accredited Form Six pupils,” Mrs Perrott said. Girls wanting to take part must have parental pci-mission.
