Tennis classic popular
The high class tennis promised by the Winfield Classic field at Wilding Park next month appears to have captured the imagination of the sporting public. First day sales of season tickets on Monday were heavy, and the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association might have to consider the erection of additional seating to meet the demand. “It looks as if it. will be a boomer,” said a jubilant Mr Brian Fanils, president of the association, yesterday. “The standard of play will be greater than that in a Davis Cup tie, and this appears to have been recognised by the public, because of their very gratifying response.” Mr Faulls described the first day sales as “beyond expectations.” Club bookings, too, were coming to hand and even tiny country clubs were applying for about 10 to 15 tickets apiece. “We have had inquiries from all over the country, and bookings from as far north as Rotorua,” Mr Faulls said. “I reckon most of the. best seats will have gone by December 1, which is the deadline for club returns.” If the volume of bookings was maintained, the organising committee might well have to consider the erection of temporary seating in front of the memorial stand, Mr Faulls said. This could be done at short notice. Season tickets only are being offered for sale at present Single day sales will be made on the day during the life of the classsic, from December 11 to 14.
