Simon Robinson named ‘golfer of the year’
The provincial captain,! Simon Robinson, is the inaugural winner of the Can-1 terbury “golfer of the award. He was presented with the trophy at the Canterbury association’s annual dinner last evening. The award, which is based, on performance, etiquette, sportsmanship, golfing ability I and contribution to the sport, was judged by the match committee, the con-, vener of selectors and thei president, and was endorsed; by the management committee. Robinson met all those re-: quirements and was a deserved winner. He had hisj first success in the Can-'
terbury match-play championship, won the St andrews Salver for leading the qualifiers for the New Zealand amateur championship, led Canterbury to victory in the South Island inter-provincial event, and was the only player to score the possible seven, wins in the Freyberg Rose Bowl tournament.
Another new award presented last evening was the P.G.F. Vardon Trophy which was won by the Canterbury No. 3, John Williamson. Williamson recorded the lowest stroke average in tournaments nominated by the Canterbury association.
