Thoreau colt fetches $7l00 at sale
PA Invercargill Fifty-four thoroughbreds changed hands for $69,725, an average of $1278, at the inaugural Southland sale conducted by Pyne, Gould, Guinness Ltd, in conjunction with Wrightson Bloodstock Ltd at the Invercargill A. and P. showgrounds. Originally, 107 lots were catalogued, but 13 withdrawals reduced the number to 94 offered. There were 40 passings. Of the 44 yearlings catalogued, 26 were sold, 12 were passed and six were withdrawn. The 26 yearlings were sold for an aggregate of $32,875, an average of $1264. “The prices reflected the true value of the horses," Mr Peter Kelly, one of the auctioneers, said afterwards. “Horses with breeding and presentation met with good competition — the worldwide trend is that it is very difficult to sell stock with little appeal.” Top price of the sale was $7lOO paid by Peter Kerslake, of Invercargill, for a vearling colt bv the Frenchbred Thoreau from the Bellborough mare, Nika, offered by Messis H. Haligan and A. J. Lawton.

Clearwater, of Seaward Downs, paid $3200 for the colt’s close relative by Thoreau from Princess Victoria, also offered by Messrs Lawton and Halligan. Wrightson N.M.A. Hamilton, as agent'? paid $2600 for a quality Bardall gelding from Catkin, a half-sister to; Blue Denim (Auckland Cup)J offered by Mr and Mrs B. B. Lodge Trust, Heriot. ‘The Otaki horseman,! Anton Koolman, paid $2000; for a chestnut colt gyj Thoreau from Cardale Park, offered by Mr and Mrs B B. A. Dawson, in Invercargill. Michael Mavor, of Scotts Gap, paid $2BOO for a grand type of yearling filly by Thoreau from Better Dancer (by Better Boy), offered by Mr Murray Day, of South Hillend. The filly is a halfsister to Charax (five wins) and Fleurway, a winner last season. • A notable sale in the two- 1 year-old section was the; $4BOO paid by Mr R.
