Cara Dee too strong

'PA Invercargill [ Cara Dee notched his ; third success in his last five 'starts when he mastered Charlson in a bitter duel over the last 200 m of the Radio New Zealand Handicaji. first leg of the T.A.B. double on the second day of the Southland Racing Club’s summer meeting in Invercargill yesterday. Cara Dee, runner-up to Purple Velle on the first day and the winner of the Fireside Cup at Wyndham before, that, enjoyed a good run in behind; the pacemaker, Jack Hobbs, and moved forward to head that runner at the 600 m. Charlson, Helen’s Ridge and Bellus completed a line of four on the home turn. Charlson and Cara Dee soon sorted themselves out and engaged in a desperate struggle in the heavy ground. Cara Dee did slightly better to win by three-quar-ters of a length from Charlson. Bellus. which pulled early and was wide at the 1600 m, plugged on resolutely for third. Four lengths away Helen’sRidge, which looked a big; chance on the turn, faded to fourth.

I Ultimate, making his first i appearance for over a year, beat the sprinters in the second leg, ' the Steinlager Handicap. The seven-year-old, Final Orders gelding was having his first start from the Riverton stable of M. J. Tait and after getting a good run in behind the leaders to the stiaight, surged to the front at the 200 m and held on well. Ohcee, slow away, made ground from the mid-field at the 800 m to finish fast wide out for second, half a head away. There was a. length to Hikohiko, which made ground well from back for third.
