Comment sought on forest plan
Public comment on management plans for Westland State forests is being sought bv the Forest Service. The service has released the North Westland draft regional management plan and the South Westland forest management proposals to attract comment. ‘■Westland's forests are vital for many purposes: timber and other forest products, protecting water and soil, preserving unique flora and fauna, and recreation,” said the Westland Conservator of Forests, Mr P. Fitzgerald.
“These documents recognise the forests’ important values and aim to provide acceptable solutions for their management.” he said. The future for North Westland forests was “fairly clear-cut” and the proposals had been presented as a draft management plan. But, Mr Fitzgerald said, the answers in the south were less clear and the suggested course of management was presented as a proposal for public airing.
