Criticism of port charges

The Lyttelton Harbour; Board has defended its pro-, posed 15 per cent increase in port charges, which has drawn fire from shipping companies. Shipping companies have said they could not absorb the high increases alone I while they were trying to 1 keep freight increases to a minimum. The companies were also concerned that no meeting had been called between shipping-line representatives, i import-export bodies, and the Harbour Board before freight increases were! sought. I The board’s chairman. Mr| J. E. Mannering. said it had, taken the normal steps required to increase its gen-! eral port charges. A special meeting on November 5 had approved a 15 per cent increase to cover its operating costs. Copies of the proposed increases in charges had been given to shipping companies before the meeting. Mr Mannering said that while port charges represented about 4 per cent of shipping costs on the New Zealand coast, economy measures would be taken to keep charges as low as possible.
