The French. countess’s husband gave the table to a London silversmith, Gordon Jefferson, after she died, and it was purchased in 1957 by a woman now living in Christchurch. She and the table have travelled extensively, to Paris, London (twice), and South Africa. Mr Watson said he had no accurate idea of what it was worth, but $20,000 did not seem out of the question. More than 280 lots will be offered at today’s auction.
