Rail excursions prove popular

About 2500 people made the return trip from Christchurch to Lyttelton yester-

day as “Operation Garden City,” a promotion campaign by New Zealand Railways, ended its three-week course. As well as a promotion campaign, the Railways hope to raise $25,000 for the Kidney and Dialysis Transplant Society. Last evening more than $lO,OOO had been collected, with other sources of income still to be counted.

“We ran 14 return trips to Lyttelton with 2400 paying customers and many children under four who were allowed on free,” said one of the organisers, Mr J. Bennett.

The excursion trip to ArIthur’s Pass was fully •booked, 190 passengers making the trip, he said. Cold, wet weather kept many prospective. entrants from competing in the fun run from the Christchurch Railway Station to Ferrymead, an B.skm course. "I counted on 1000 runners, with many young ones. The weather did not seem to dampen their spirits. Some turned round at Ferrymead and ran all the way back.” Mr Bennett said.

He paid a special tribute to the Railways employees who gave their time at the week-end and to run the trains, to Lyttelton and to Arthur's Pass.
