Determined Auckland hangs on to Freyberg trophy

P 4 Wellington Auckland was held to a 21-21 draw by Otago in the seventh and final round of the Freyberg Rose Bowl on Saturday afternoon, but had done enough in the previous rounds to win the tournament, which finished at the Hutt golf course late on Saturday.

Throughout the touma-| ment Auckland had shown a| grim determination to hold! on to the trophy it won last! year at Nelson, and when Saturday morning’s sixth round started in wet and cold conditions, the holder, demolished Southland, 4|-j. Because its nearest rival, | Canterbury, dropped two' games as it defeated Tasman, 3-2, Auckland would have had to lose heavily to! Otago in the last round to lose the title. ) Its No. 1, Michael Barltropl — defeated only once in the* seven rounds — got Auckland off to a great start against Otago by beating his fellow international, Geoff Clarke, 6 and 5, and Tony Treen backed him up by beating John Sanders, 2 and: 1. Philip Aickin lost, 3 and 2. to Brian Newall, and Phil Mosley lost, 1 down to Michael Atkinson, so it was) left to the No. 5, Stephen Partridge, to halve his game!

■ | with John Finn for the vital Jleveller. I Going down, 2-3 to Wel- , lington in the fifth round cost Canterbury the Rose : Bowl. On Saturday Canterbury beat both Tasman and ! Bay of Plenty, 3-2, and kept .the pressure on the winner all the way. | By beating Owen Kendall by one hole in the final round, the Canterbury No. 2 and captain, Simon Robinson, became the only player at the tournament to record I seven wins. I The experienced Kendall i made Robinson fight all the way for his achievement, and the pair were level after nine holes. A muffed second shot by Kendall at the; thirteenth saw Robinson , edge ahead, and he held the advantage to the finish. Manawatu-Wanganui finished a creditable third, with ' two victories in the final ! rounds adding to a solid i I tournament performance. i A Levin pastry cook, Neil J I Gaskin, playing at No. 1,
