Saddle moved on placed horse
A shifting saddle might have cost Nearco King victory in the Jockey Club Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday. The second favourite of 15, Nearco King ran The Twinkle to a head, making a renewed bid after the Southland mare took a short lead from him in the straight. Nearco King’s apprentice rider, Peter Didham, was ini difficulties near the 700 m when his saddle moved forward. A videotape of the race confirmed official observations that Nearco King was
pulling hard at the time his saddle moved. Didham’s gear was inspected after the race and was found to be in good condition. The Twinkle and Nearco King had the finish of the Jockey Club Handicap to . themselves. The race also produced a battle for third between the long shots Lady Link and Jaws, which finished in that order with only a nose between them. Jaws’s rider, Bill Berry, was later fined $3O for weighing in 0.75 kg in excess of his weigh-out weight.
